Senior Tax Counsel

Mark is a Senior Tax Counsel at BNR Partners specialising in the provision of advice to both legal practices and listed trustee companies throughout Australia.

Mark has over 36 years’ experience as a senior tax practitioner having accumulated a broad array of diverse experience having held senior roles in industry, academia, and chartered accounting.

He was also previously the Senior Tax Counsel at CPA Australia for over eight years where he played a significant strategic role in the design, implementation, and administration of taxation laws particularly those impacting small to medium sized enterprises.

Mark consults over a wide range of matters impacting closely held family groups including the taxation of trusts, the operation of Division 7A, business reorganisations including divestments, mergers and capital gains tax including the availability of the small business CGT concessions.

As part of BNR Partners team servicing legal practices, he also regularly advises clients on an array of matters relating to deceased estates and testamentary trusts and related entities which they may control.

Mark has degrees in Law and Commerce from Melbourne University having majored in Accounting. He is also a registered tax agent, a Fellow of CPA Australia and the Tax Institute, and has been admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor in the State of Victoria.

He has also a regular speaker on taxation matters for various professional bodies including The Tax Institute and is the author of the publication ‘CGT Advanced’ which is available from CPA Australia.

Mark is also a member of various ATO consultative forums including the Tax Practitioner Stewardship Group, the FBT Working Group and is Co-Chair of the Tax Practitioner Digital Implementation Group.

He is also a Deputy Chair of CPA Australia’s Victorian Public Practice Committee, and a member of the Tax Institute’s Victorian Education Committee.
