Senior Tax Consultant

Kate joined BNR Partners in March 2025 as a Senior Tax Consultant.

She has had extensive experience working as a senior lawyer in the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Commonwealth Treasury. In these roles she instructed on the conduct of significant litigation in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Federal Court and High Court, including with respect to the taxation of trusts; lead the policy development, law design and/or implementation of various new taxation measures such as the mineral resource rent tax, the remedial amendments to the general anti-avoidance rule in Part IVA and GST on low value goods; and provided technical advice on the interpretation and application of various taxation laws. She also chaired the ATO’s National Tax Liaison Group Trust Consultation Sub-group.

Since leaving the ATO, Kate has completed a doctorate of laws at the Australian National University (ANU).  Her doctoral research focused on the treatment of discretionary trusts in family law property settlements. Whilst undertaking her research she convened, and lectured in, undergraduate and postgraduate income tax courses at the ANU College of Law and assisted with the delivery of several property law and succession law courses.

Kate is admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, having completed the Tasmanian legal practice course and undertaken a legal apprenticeship with a commercial law firm in Launceston.

Outside of work you will find Kate obsessed with her family, dachshunds, golf and travel.
